Now, let us examine what the song means and what the bards of the Bulgarian
nation are trying to tell us:
[A Literary Analysis]
Iliya, ladies and gentlemen, is a young, pious fellow, (not unlike many of us
in here) minding his own business and building himself a cell, so he can have
a place to praise the Lord, to contemplate the illusory nature of life and the
vanity of it all. Some of you may ask: "But why the hell is he building a cell
in the middle of a cross-road?" You see, my dear readers, a retirement from
life is only a symbolic act. One cannot simply abandon wordily life and the
secular pleasures in order to achieve an enlightenment. One must abandon not
only the material objects, but the thought of them, one must abolish the
desire for these objects. Thus Iliya, having obviously studied the holy
scriptures, is building himself a cell where all the wordily temptations can
reach him, so he may exercise his powers and reject them. Another thing to
consider here is that probably nobody wanted to deliver him the stone material
for the cell to a place where there are no roads. The Bulgarian contractors
are notorious with their inflexibility in this respect. That is why Iliya is
building a cell on a crossroad.
But what do you know! Just when the noble lad has finished his cell and has
prepared himself for a long night of prayers and meditations - look who's
coming! Irina, a young, beautiful woman, that has been the downfall of many a
pious monks, has decided to visit Iliya. Notice where she is coming from. The
bards say that she's coming "otdolu", "from below". And we all know, don't we,
what this word refers to. Irina is sent from Satan himself, so she can tempt
Iliya and ensure him the fires of Hell forever. And she is talking to Iliya,
not unlike Eve was talking to Adam in times Biblical, and we all know how that
ended, don't we?
What is she saying? She says: Take me, brother Iliya". Aha! Eve was urging
Adam to take the "apple" - the evil, but Irina is saying "take ME"! The evil
of the world has reached gigantic proportions since times Biblical and now the
carrier of evil is evil herself. Before there was Eve and the apple, but now
just the carrier of evil - Irina herself - is capable to cause the downfall of
the poor, defenseless man! Note that she perfectly well realizes the absurdity
of her wishes, since she refers to the cell as "narrow" - "tyasna". Why is the
cell narrow? Because in the life of Iliya there is no place for evil, and
Irina knows it, yet she insists to be "taken". Astounding, ain't it!?
But, of course, Iliya firmly refuses, setting an example for all of us. He
says, I can't, honey-pie, not a phucking chance! Ooohh, but he is smart, for
he knows what a heap of trouble she is trying to get him into. He says, I
can't because your hair is blond and your eyes are blue. And we all know what
that means, don't we? Let me tell you, when I was in my prime, I met a blond,
blue-eyed woman (from Sweden) on a resort on the Black Sea. She took whatever
she was looking for, and then shamelessly abandoned me to suffer in loneliness
and despair. So, probably Iliya has had similar experiences and knows better
than to believe women with blond hair and blue eyes. Atta boy!
But Irina doesn't give up. She's offering to change her appearance, without
realizing that Iliya is not concerned with the appearance, the form, but he
cares for the essence, for the Truth covered by the form. So she's ready to
close her eyes, and dye her hair, but she's not ready to give up her evil
ways.
We can't be sure how the story ends, but I for one, am pretty confident that
Iliya has resisted all temptations and had continued on his spiritual
journey. May we all fight any future temptations and uphold the righteous way,
just as he did!
Amen.
